Twitter did precisely that last night. But there's a catch: the bots that are being blocked are the good ones.
Several government Twitter accounts have lost the capacity to immediately post breaking news and events. As it transitions to Musk's new high-priced premium API system, Twitter has begun deleting API access, which allows many of these accounts to post in an authorized way.
Many of the affected Twitter accounts have automated updates, but they aren't the hands-off bot accounts that some people envision when they hear the term "bot."
Numerous National Weather Service accounts, for example, reported that they could no longer offer up-to-the-minute, potentially life-saving updates, both automatic and manually provided by humans.
[8:30 AM] Twitter is now limiting automated tweets and as a result this account can no longer auto post warnings as we have done so in the past. We will continue to provide general updates, but always ensure that you have multiple means for receiving weather information & alerts.
